Other Passport / Visa Photo Rules, Guidelines, and Specifications

Do I have the option to wear a hat or headcover in my passport photo?

A hat or head covering may be worn, but you must provide documentation proving it is a recognized, traditional religious item worn often in public or a signed doctor's letter confirming its use daily for medical purposes.

The hats and head coverings you wear should not block your face or cast shadows, and your entire face should be visible.

Is it alright for me to wear sunglasses, glasses, or tinted glasses for my passport photo?
No, You must remove your glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses for your passport photo.

It is necessary to submit a doctor's note if you are not able to remove your glasses due to medical reasons.

What is the correct way to pose when taking my photo?
Look directly into the camera with your head centered, not tilted, and smile naturally or with a neutral expression.

Can I smile in my passport photo?
Yes, However, the smile should be natural and not overdone, your teeth cannot be shown.

Can I take my passport photos in my uniform?

No. Camouflage, uniforms, and clothing that resembles uniforms are not allowed.

I have red-eye in my photo. Can I remove it?
No, you cannot remove it digitally. You will have to retake the photo without red eye.

What is the best way to take pictures of a baby or toddler?
Take a photo of your baby or toddler without any other people in it.

We recommend laying your baby flat on its back (do not worry about the background, we will automatically remove it). Make sure there are no shadows on your baby's face when taking a picture. Photographing your child in a car seat may be helpful as well.

Utilize your camera's burst mode to take as many photos as possible in one shot.

Can the eye of my child in the passport photo be closed?
Partially or completely closed eyes are okay for infants. The eyes of other children should be open.

Should I take a new picture if my appearance changes (I grow a beard or I dye my hair)?
Changing your passport photo should only be done if your appearance has changed significantly since your passport was issued. A new beard or dyed hair would not qualify as a significant change. If you can still be identified by your current passport photo, you do not need to apply for a new passport.

You might need a new passport if:

  • A significant facial surgery or trauma has taken place
  • Numerous or large facial piercings/tattoos were added or removed
  • you have gained or lost a lot of weight
  • you have changed gender

Unless the appearance of your child under the age of 16 has changed due to natural aging, you do not have to apply for a new passport for your child.

What color shirt should I wear for a passport photo?

Clothing that contrasts clearly with the background is recomended. You should not wear a white shirt because it will blend in with the white background.

Can I take a passport photo with my phone?

A smartphone, such as an iPhone, Android device, can be used to take passport photos. But you must make sure that your photo is in high resolutiion and clear.

How to make United States Passport photo in Seattle

Step 1: Use a digital camera or a smartphone

Find someone to take the photo for you and selfie photo is not acceptable for passport photo application. If you have a tripod, use it. A tripod will make it easier to keep the camera steady and level. The distance of the person to the camera should be around 1 meter.

Step 2: Find a venue with good lighting

When taking photo, you should face the light, such as a nice bright window or the door. This can provide even lighting to avoid shadows on the face and background. The face must be evenly lit. There should be no shadows and glares on the face.

Note: No need to worry about the background as our online passport photo generator will automatically remove or change the background for you.

Step 3: Wear properly for your passport photo

Do not wear uniforms. Wear regular street clothes in your photo.

Do not wear eyeglasses. If you wear glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses, take them off for your passport photo.

Your face must still be fully visible.  Don’t let your hair drape over your face and obscure your eyes. If you have very long bangs that cover your eyebrows, you should pin them back with bobby pins. It’s best if your ears show, as well, but that won’t cause your photo to be rejected.

No hats are allowed in passport photos unless it is religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke that you wear every day.

Step 4: Pose for a passport

Look straight towards the camera with face straight on. Head should not be tilted or rotated.

Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears.

Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

Position the camera in the same height as the head.

Step 5: Have a neutral facial expression

You can smile in your passport photos, but the government prefers that you have a neutral facial expression.

Smiling or having your mouth open is usually not acceptable, especially under the new international passport rules.
