Other Passport / Visa Photo Rules, Guidelines, and Specifications

If I wear sunglasses, glasses, or tinted glasses in my passport photo, is that okay?
No, you will need to remove them.

In case you cannot remove your glasses due to medical reasons, you should submit a note signed by your doctor.

Is it okay for me to wear a hat or headcover in my passport photo?
Yes, you may wear a hat or headcover in your passport photo. You must submit a signed statement, however, stating that the hat or head covering is part of recognized, traditional religious attire that is commonly worn or required in public or that the item is being worn daily for medical reasons.

You need to be able to see your entire face and your hairline cannot be obscured.

What is the best way to pose for my picture?
Your head should be centered in the frame, not tilted, and your expression should be neutral or natural.

When I take my passport photo, can I smile?
Yes, but the smile should be natural and not exaggerated.

Can I wear a uniform in my passport photo?
No, you are not allowed to wear uniforms or apparel that resembles uniforms.

My photo has red-eye. Can I remove it?
Red-eye cannot be removed digitally. You'll have to submit a new photo without red eye.

Are there any tips to take photos of babies and toddlers?
You should not include anyone else in a photo of your baby or toddler.

Place your baby on its back on a flat surface (don't worry about the background, our website will automatically remove it). If you take a picture of your baby from above, make sure there are no shadows on her face. It may also be helpful to take a picture of your child in the car seat.

Using your camera's burst mode, capture as many pictures as you can in one shot.

Does it matter if my child's eye is closed in his or her photo?
Infants can have partially closed or closed eyes. For the other children, their eyes must be open.

If my appearance changes (have I grown a beard, have I dyed my hair) should I take a new photo?
It is only necessary if your appearance has markedly changed since your passport was issued. Adding a beard or changing your hair color would not constitute a significant change. If you can still be identified by your photo in your current passport, you do not need a new passport.

You may need a new passport if:

  • Transformed from one gender to another
  • Undergone significant facial surgery or trauma
  • Added or removed numerous/large facial piercings or tattoos
  • Undergone a significant amount of weight loss or gain

Your child does not need a new passport if their appearance has changed due to natural aging processes.

How to make United States Passport photo in Chicago

Step 1: Use a digital camera or a smartphone

Find someone to take the photo for you and selfie photo is not acceptable for passport photo application. If you have a tripod, use it. A tripod will make it easier to keep the camera steady and level. The distance of the person to the camera should be around 1 meter.

Step 2: Find a venue with good lighting

When taking photo, you should face the light, such as a nice bright window or the door. This can provide even lighting to avoid shadows on the face and background. The face must be evenly lit. There should be no shadows and glares on the face.

Note: No need to worry about the background as our online passport photo generator will automatically remove or change the background for you.

Step 3: Wear properly for your passport photo

Do not wear uniforms. Wear regular street clothes in your photo.

Do not wear eyeglasses. If you wear glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses, take them off for your passport photo.

Your face must still be fully visible.  Don’t let your hair drape over your face and obscure your eyes. If you have very long bangs that cover your eyebrows, you should pin them back with bobby pins. It’s best if your ears show, as well, but that won’t cause your photo to be rejected.

No hats are allowed in passport photos unless it is religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke that you wear every day.

Step 4: Pose for a passport

Look straight towards the camera with face straight on. Head should not be tilted or rotated.

Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears.

Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

Position the camera in the same height as the head.

Step 5: Have a neutral facial expression

You can smile in your passport photos, but the government prefers that you have a neutral facial expression.

Smiling or having your mouth open is usually not acceptable, especially under the new international passport rules.
