A photograph or a similar pictorial record (hereinafter a “photograph”) has a smooth surface, must satisfy tests for image stability and be black and white or colour. It is rectangular measuring 35 mm x 45 mm, standing on the shorter side with straight or rounded (radius = 3 mm +/- 0.5 mm,) corners and is 0.13 to 0.27 mm thick.
 

The photograph shows the head and upper part of the shoulders of the person facing the camera so that the central vertical plane of the face is extended to the vertical plane of the camera lens and the horizontal plane of the face formed by the eyes is extended to the horizontal plane of the camera lens.
 

The photograph must correspond to the person’s appearance at the time of filing the application. Photos of you looking over your shoulder, turned to the side or with the head inclined are not acceptable. The expression must be neutral with the mouth closed and the eyes open. Hair should not cover the face.
 

The minimum distance between the upper edge of the head and the upper edge of the photo is 2 mm. The height of the facial part of the head, which is formed by the distance between the eyes and the chin, is at least 13 mm.
 

The background is white to light blue, or if needs be, a light grey colour. Various hues of these colours are acceptable. The photograph should be free from reflection or glare that would markedly change the person’s characteristic identifying traits such as the shape and location of the eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin and the overall shape of the face. The photograph cannot be retouched nor can any other modifications be made to the negative or positive nor can the person’s image be digitally processed and then printed.

Steps to Create Your Own Passport / Visa Photos

  • Select the country and the photo type.
  • Upload a photo. Once the photo is uploaded, the Crop page opens.
  • On the Crop page, you can cut the image using the crop frame.
  • When you have completed the cropping, click on the Next button.
  • On the enhancement page, select the best photo with bright background and not overexposed, then click the Next button.

How to take a picture for passport photo at home

  • Equipment: Use a digital camera or the back camera of your smartphone to take high quality photos.
  • Background: Take the photo in front of a plain background such as white wall or screen. Make sure that there are no other objects in the background.
  • Lighting: Make sure there are no shadows on your face or on the background. Adjust the distance to the wall to remove shadows on the background. Face the light source such as a window to remove shadows on the face. You can use additional light source to get even lighting on the face.
  • Facial features: Have a neutral facial expression. Look straight to the camera. Shown full face. Eyebrows should not be covered by hair. Eyes open. Mouth closed. Slight smile is acceptable.
  • Position the camera in the same height as the head.
  • Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

How to print your passport photos

There are three ways you can print your passport photos:

  1. You can print your passport photo at home using a color printer.
  2. Save the photo to a thumb drive and print it at any photo printing shops like Costco, CVS, Walgreens and Walmart.
