English Version

What Are the Chinese Visa Photo Requirements?

A Chinese visa photo must be a recent color photograph that clearly shows your current appearance. The photo should be taken within the last six months, with your full face directed toward the camera and your head centered in the image.

The standard China visa photo size is 33 mm wide by 48 mm high. This is sometimes written as 33 × 48 mm or 48 × 33 mm, with the width stated as 33 mm and the height as 48 mm.

1. China Visa Photo Size and Dimensions

Your printed China visa photo should meet the following size requirements:

  • Photo width: 33 mm
  • Photo height: 48 mm
  • Head width: approximately 15–22 mm
  • Head height, measured from the chin to the top of the head: approximately 28–33 mm
  • Space between the top of the head and the upper edge of the photo: approximately 3–5 mm
  • The head and face must be centered and shown at the correct scale

For a digital photo, the official technical guidance specifies an image between approximately 354–420 pixels wide and 472–560 pixels high. The file should normally be a JPEG image using RGB color, with a file size of approximately 40–120 KB.

2. Colour, Format and File Size

  • Colour mode: 24-bit RGB true colour

  • File format: JPEG

  • File size: generally 40 KB to 120 KB

3. Facial Position and Expression

Look directly at the camera and ensure that your full head and face are clearly visible.

You should:

  • Keep both eyes open

  • Keep your mouth closed

  • Maintain a natural, neutral expression

  • Keep both ears visible where possible

  • Avoid exaggerated expressions or facial distortion

  • Ensure that no hair, hands, toys, people or other objects obscure the face

The head must not turn or tilt sideways by more than 20 degrees and must not tilt upward or downward by more than 25 degrees.

4. Eyeglasses

Tinted glasses and thick-framed glasses should not be worn.

Clear prescription glasses may be acceptable provided that:

  • The lenses do not cause glare

  • The frames do not cover the eyes

  • No shadows appear around the eyes

Removing your glasses is recommended to reduce the risk of rejection.

5. Head Coverings

Hats, scarves and other head coverings should generally not be worn.

Head coverings required for religious reasons are permitted, provided that they do not hide the face, facial outline or any facial features.

6. Photo Quality

The photograph must be:

  • Clear and complete

  • Free from dirt, creases and damage

  • Properly focused and exposed

  • Free from red-eye

  • Free from shadows on the face or background

  • Evenly lit

  • Natural in skin tone

  • Centred within the frame

  • Taken against a consistently lit background

In a digital image, the distance between the eyes must be greater than 60 pixels.

7. Digital Photo Positioning

Using a 354 × 472 pixel photograph as a reference:

  • The head must be horizontally centred

  • The face should be 205 ± 14 pixels wide

  • The distance from the top of the image to the top of the head or hairline should be 10–70 pixels

  • The distance from the bottom of the image to the horizontal centre line of the eyes must be greater than 256 pixels

If the hair is particularly high or voluminous, a small portion may be cropped to maintain the required facial dimensions and eye position.

Where the top-of-head measurement and eye-position requirement cannot both be met, the eye-position requirement should take priority.

8. Printed Photo Positioning

  • Head width: 15–22 mm

  • Head height from chin to crown: 28–33 mm

  • Space between the top of the head and the upper edge of the photo: 3–5 mm

  • Space between the chin and the bottom edge of the photo: at least 7 mm

9. Background and Border

  • Use a white or nearly white background

  • The background must be plain and free from patterns, objects and noticeable shadows

  • The photograph must not have a border

10. Photo Recency

The photograph must have been taken within the last six months.

Do not worry about the photo size requirements. IDPhotoDIY online tool will help you make correct China (中国) Visa size photos.

How to make China (中国) Visa photo online

Step 1: Use a digital camera or a smartphone

Find someone to take the photo for you and selfie photo is not acceptable for passport photo application. If you have a tripod, use it. A tripod will make it easier to keep the camera steady and level. The distance of the person to the camera should be around 1 meter.

Step 2: Find a venue with good lighting

When taking photo, you should face the light, such as a nice bright window or the door. This can provide even lighting to avoid shadows on the face and background. The face must be evenly lit. There should be no shadows and glares on the face.

Note: No need to worry about the background as our online passport photo generator will automatically remove or change the background for you.

Step 3: Wear properly for your passport photo

Do not wear uniforms. Wear regular street clothes in your photo.

Do not wear eyeglasses. If you wear glasses, sunglasses, or tinted glasses, take them off for your passport photo.

Your face must still be fully visible.  Don’t let your hair drape over your face and obscure your eyes. If you have very long bangs that cover your eyebrows, you should pin them back with bobby pins. It’s best if your ears show, as well, but that won’t cause your photo to be rejected.

No hats are allowed in passport photos unless it is religious headgear such as a headscarf or yarmulke that you wear every day.

Step 4: Pose for a passport

Look straight towards the camera with face straight on. Head should not be tilted or rotated.

Both ears showing or both edges of the face visible if hair covers the ears.

Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

Position the camera in the same height as the head.
