ICAO-Compliant Passport Photo Requirements

The following standards outline how passport photographs must be taken and prepared in order to comply with ICAO guidelines.

  • The photo must show a close-up of the head and upper shoulders, with the face occupying 80–85% of the image.
  • Images must be in color with dimensions of 630 × 810 pixels.
  • Photos must be original and not digitally altered.
  • The background must be plain white.
  • Required characteristics:
    • The applicant must face the camera directly.
    • Skin tones must appear natural.
    • Brightness and contrast must be balanced.
    • Eyes must be clearly visible and open.
    • Hair must not obstruct the eyes.
    • Lighting should be even, with no shadows, glare, or red-eye.
    • The mouth must remain closed.
    • The camera should be positioned approximately 1.5 meters away.
    • The image must be sharp and in focus.
  • The portrait must show the full face from the front with eyes open.
  • The head must be fully visible from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin.
  • The head must be centered and not tilted.
  • No shadows or reflections are permitted on the face or background. Glasses should be removed to prevent glare.
  • Lighting must not cause red-eye or obscure the visibility of the eyes.
  • Head coverings are only allowed for religious reasons; the face must remain fully visible from the chin to the forehead and both sides.
  • The facial expression should be natural.

Steps to Create Your Own Passport / Visa Photos

  • Select the country and the photo type.
  • Upload a photo. Once the photo is uploaded, the Crop page opens.
  • On the Crop page, you can cut the image using the crop frame.
  • When you have completed the cropping, click on the Next button.
  • On the enhancement page, select the best photo with bright background and not overexposed, then click the Next button.
  • Download the printable image from the Download page.

How to take a picture for passport photo at home

  • Equipment: Use a digital camera or the back camera of your smartphone to take high quality photos.
  • Background: Take the photo in front of a plain background such as white wall or screen. Make sure that there are no other objects in the background.
  • Lighting: Make sure there are no shadows on your face or on the background. Adjust the distance to the wall to remove shadows on the background. Face the light source such as a window to remove shadows on the face. You can use additional light source to get even lighting on the face.
  • Facial features: Have a neutral facial expression. Look straight to the camera. Shown full face. Eyebrows should not be covered by hair. Eyes open. Mouth closed. Slight smile is acceptable.
  • Position the camera in the same height as the head.
  • Shoulders should be visible, and there should be enough space around the head for cropping the photo.

There are three ways you can print your passport photos:
